Selling your house yourself?

My dad ped away in 2001 and my brother moved out last year, so my mom has decided to sell the house my family has been in for 22 years. We are trying to help her do this and she is very insistent on not listing through a realtor because a friend of hers sold her home herself and my mom doesn't want to have to pay the 10% commission. Does anyone have any experience with this?? I did ForSaleByOwner.com already and the papers, I just want to make sure that I've got my bases covered and my mom doesn't get taken for a ride by someone, the last four years have been rough enough!! We live in a suburb of Peoria, Illinois and the market is still pretty good.
